Gordon Hunter

1931-2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Hunter on September 30th, 2026, just shy of his 95th birthday. Gordon was born and raised in Eltham, Southeast London, to Lily Elizabeth Ritchie and David Hunter. A devoted son, dedicated husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and true friend, he lived a full life, anchored always by his love for his family and friends, and his legendary sense of humour.

Gordon shared vivid memories of his childhood in London during WWII, including the bittersweet experience of being evacuated to rural safety in Devon and separated from his family. During his young adult life, he served in the British Royal Navy. Following his military service, he set his sights across the Atlantic and emigrated from Britain to Canada where he met the love of his life, Marsha McGlashan. Together, they built a beautiful marriage of 61 years, defined by a mutual love of family, travel, and adventure.

Gordon had a long and successful career with Dominion Engineering. Yet, his passions extended far beyond his work life. He was a lifelong athlete; rugby player for the Montreal Barbarians, marathon runner, cross country and downhill skier. Gordon found peace in Canadian nature, whether canoe tripping in Algonquin and La Vérendrye Parks or paddling the Nahanni and Missinaibi Rivers, he embraced all that Canada has to offer. In retirement, he discovered a passion for golf, a hobby that brought him endless joy—and the ultimate golf achievement of a hole-in-one!

Above all, Gordon was a joy to be around and quite simply the funniest person in the room. His quick wit and brilliant humour caught the attention of all. To know him was to love him.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Marsha, his children, David (Annmarie) Hunter of Riverdale, NY; Stephen (Olivia) Hunter of Yonkers, NY; and Jennifer (Gary) Giuffrida of Clifton Park, NY; grandchildren Liam, Declan, Maximus, Margaret; great grandson Mark Julius; his niece, Sue Hunter Sibun of Kent, UK, and a community of neighbors and friends who will miss him dearly.
