Stephen Cuddihy
1936 – 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Stephen Cuddihy, on March 2, 2025, at the age of 88.
He is survived by his daughters, Bridget (Francis Archambault), Isabel, and Julie (Claude Dufresne); the mother of his daughters, Lise Archambault; his grandchildren Roseline, Xavier, Alex, Léa, Juliette, and Chloé; as well as his daughter Julie’s stepchildren, Olivier and Catherine. Predeceased by his parents, Judge Michael Paul Cuddihy and Irene Egleston, his brothers Michael and Basil, and his sister Anne. He also leaves to mourn his brothers Peter (Pâquerette Laperrière) and Paul (Ann Mc Asey), and sisters Elizabeth (Howard Ferguson) and Margaret (Roger Warren); sister-in-law Louise Larose and brother-in-law Georges Dubé, as well as nephews, nieces, and many relatives and friends.
A loving father and grandfather, devoted to his family and the people around him, he will be remembered for his generosity, his humility, and great pride in his Irish heritage, which he never failed to mention. Born in Rouyn, the fourth of eight children, he was admitted to the bar in 1962 and appointed Chief Crown Prosecutor of Montreal during the October Crisis of 1970; his ardour, ernestness and sharp wit made him a formidable litigator. In 1972, he was appointed to the Court of Sessions of the Peace in St-Jérôme, where he served until his retirement in 1994. He then served across Canada as a judge of the Tax Court of Canada, until 2000. Committed to his community, he was involved in a number of causes. Among other things, he was a key figure in the development of the C.R.C. Curé-Labelle, a social reintegration centre in Saint-Jérôme, for which he was a member of the Board of Directors until 2011.
The family will receive condolences on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lakeshore Cardinal Funeral Home, 560 Chemin du Bord-du-Lac, Dorval, H9S2B3. A mass will be held on May 9 at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Basilica, 460 boul. René-Lévesque W., Montreal, H2Z 1A7.
